However, while the former titles did not debut their AR content until just ahead of their respective season finales, the latter arrives just in time for the debut of the God of Mischief’s time-traveling exploits.
For Loki, Disney Plus has opted to publish its AR experience as a Sponsored Lens on Snapchat. The experience includes a virtual background influenced by the show’s premise, a golden clock with multiple hands rotating because multiverse. Tapping the screen adjusts the virtual lighting of the scene.
The highlight, though, occurs in the foreground, where you’ll find your name overlaid on the camera view with the show’s typeface of the letters randomly shifting, much like the show’s logo, now familiar to fans through various trailers.
Fans will have fun with this, but Disney Plus is running a business here, and there’s a call-to-action for users within the Lens. Using Snapchat’s Shoppable AR e-commerce tool adds a button for users to sign-up for Disney Plus and watch the series.
Because the Loki Lens is of the sponsored variety, you’ll need to access it via the Lens Carousel rather than a link or scannable code. And you’ll likely need to act fast, as Sponsored Lenses do not typically have a long shelf-life.
Disney and Marvel have a history of spreading AR experiences across various platforms. For instance, WandaVision was promoted through Facebook Messenger, while the Disney Insider app served as the home for the Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s AR experience.
Previous properties have been featured with AR content via a Playground AR Playmoji pack for Google Pixel devices and the Moviebill in-theater magazine. Marvel has also toyed with AR wearables, such as the Iron Man AR helmet and the Dimension of Heroes game for Lenovo’s Mirage AR headset.
Fans who have already dived into the first episode of Loki will also notice some neat AR concepts. But I won’t spoil those for you, you’ll have to make time to see it yourself.
